Founder decision guide
All Shopify resourcesShopify vs Etsy: which should you start with?
Reviewed 15 August 2026
Choose Etsy when marketplace discovery and a simpler first sales channel matter more than owning the full customer experience. Choose Shopify when you are building a standalone brand, want direct control over the storefront and expect the store to become business infrastructure. Some founders sensibly use both, with a clear role for each channel.
The decision in one table
| Decision | Etsy | Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Primary model | Sell inside an existing marketplace | Operate a standalone ecommerce storefront |
| Early discovery | Potential marketplace search exposure, with competition beside the listing | The business must bring in customers through search, social, email, partnerships or ads |
| Brand and journey control | Constrained by marketplace templates and rules | More control over domain, navigation, content, merchandising and theme |
| Cost shape | Listing, transaction and payment-processing fees; optional services can add cost | Recurring platform plan plus payment, theme, app and service costs where chosen |
| Best early fit | Eligible marketplace products and founders validating demand | Founders committed to a distinct brand and direct storefront |
Start with Etsy when
- Your products fit Etsy's current seller and item rules.
- You want to test marketplace demand before investing in a complete independent storefront.
- You accept that Etsy controls the marketplace environment and seller policies.
Start with Shopify when
- You already know the audience, initial offer and brand direction.
- You need a custom domain and a customer journey organized around your own catalog.
- You are prepared to bring in customers and manage payments, policies, fulfilment and support.
When using both makes sense
Etsy can remain a marketplace channel while Shopify becomes the brand's own storefront. Manage stock, pricing, support and policies across both. Do not assume updates will stay in sync without the right process or tools.
