What do you need before building a Shopify dropshipping store?

Reviewed 15 August 2026

A legitimate dropshipping store needs more than a product feed and a theme. Before building, confirm supplier reliability, product evidence, realistic delivery expectations, customer support, returns, compliance ownership and the storefront content that explains them.

1. Validate the offer without inventing certainty

Define the initial products, intended customer and reason to buy. Review wholesale cost, shipping cost, payment fees, returns, refunds, taxes and expected support effort before setting a retail price. Do not publish scarcity, delivery or product-performance claims that the supplier and business cannot support.

2. Perform supplier and product due diligence

  • Identify the legal supplier and where goods actually ship from.
  • Order and inspect representative samples where appropriate.
  • Confirm inventory, packaging, tracking and exception handling.
  • Verify who owns product safety, labeling and market-specific compliance.
  • Record evidence for materials, certifications or performance claims.

A Shopify storefront can present approved facts; it cannot turn unverified supplier statements into reliable customer promises.

3. Set honest shipping and support expectations

Customers need to understand processing, delivery ranges, tracking, split shipments, duties where relevant, address changes and what happens when a parcel is delayed or lost. Assign a real support owner and define response, cancellation and refund procedures before orders arrive.

4. Prepare your policies and store settings

Your business must handle payment setup, tax, shipping, privacy, terms, returns and any required customer information, using professional advice where appropriate. Approving the theme does not prove that checkout, tax, shipping or fulfilment is ready.

5. Build a storefront around clarity

Storefront areaInput requiredCommon risk
HomepageSpecific offer, audience and proofGeneric “winning product” language
Product pageAccurate images, variants, specifications and limitationsCopied or unsupported supplier claims
Shipping informationRealistic origin, process and exception handlingPromising a best-case delivery as normal
Returns and supportApproved policy and reachable support channelDiscovering supplier restrictions after a complaint
TrustAuthentic business information and evidenceFabricated reviews, counters or badges

6. Decide whether to build or delegate

DIY can work well when learning Shopify is part of the goal and you have time to review every customer-facing detail. Hiring help can make sense when your information is ready but theme setup is taking time away from suppliers, products and marketing.
